Community cookbooks are true culinary treasures—filled with timeless, homemade recipes passed down through generations. I currently have only four vintage cookbooks on my shelf. However, they hold some of my all-time favorite dishes. These include simple four-ingredient bierocks and creamy, crowd-pleasing funeral potatoes. Overall, these books are packed with nostalgic comfort food.
However, one recipe appears again and again: the legendary Neiman Marcus $250 Cookie. This famous chocolate chip cookie is a staple in many community cookbooks. And for good reason—it’s rich, chewy, and truly unforgettable.
Many versions of the famous Neiman Marcus Cookie recipe yield up to 12 dozen cookies. But don’t worry—you can easily halve the recipe for a smaller batch. Some variations include chopped walnuts. Some recipes let you choose your favorite nut. Pecans are my personal favorite. One popular variation appears in Sage & Savory: A Wise & Flavorful Approach to Low-Fat Cookery. This cookbook was published in 1994 by Boulder Community Hospital. This version has a clever, time-saving trick. Blend the oatmeal and chocolate in a food processor. This way, you don’t need to grate chocolate by hand. This shortcut makes the process faster and cleaner.
Best of all, it keeps the rich flavor of these famous cookies.

1. How to Cook
To make the legendary Neiman Marcus $250 Cookies, start by creaming together softened butter with both white and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs and vanilla extract, mixing well. In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients—flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, then stir in blended oatmeal, chocolate chips, and your choice of nuts (walnuts or pecans work best). For an authentic texture, pulse the oatmeal and chocolate together in a food processor before mixing.
Scoop the cookie dough onto a lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Let cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack.
These cookies are perfect for parties, gifts, or simply indulging at home. Crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside—just like the original Neiman Marcus cookies everyone loves!
